About VHO

Praised for "breaking new ground and pushing the envelope", and called "the future of the field" by The Washington Post, Victory Hall Opera has produced 10 years of cutting-edge, thrilling chamber opera in Charlottesville, Virginia. VHO was founded as a new model for an opera company: not an institution, but a Troupe: of exceptional, high-caliber singers, advancing the art form together.

Each performance must meet our three-fold artistic test: it must be "disarming, exquisite, sincere".

In 10 years, we’ve presented 31 original productions, and our audiences have averaged 50% non-regular-operagoers. VHO has won multiple significant awards for innovation, from The Jefferson Trust, The Music Academy of the West, New Music USA, and the NEA, among many others.

Under the leadership of soprano & director Miriam Gordon-Stewart, VHO developed its own generative, collaborative staging methodology, entitled “Motif”. Our productions also featured our innovative modular set design, the “READY.SET”.

After 10 years of pioneering, genre-defying work, VHO is entering a creative chrysalis to imagine what comes next, for us and for opera. Look for VHO to re-emerge in 2026 with wings to carry us into the next adventure.
