Featuring William Bolcom & Sandra Seaton’s song cycle From the Diary of Sally Hemings
Excerpts from Chris Farina and Reid Oechslin’s documentary film West Main Street
& newly commissioned video art by Marisa Williamson, multimedia artist
Soprano Alyson Cambridge returns to VHO as Sally Hemings - this time not at Monticello, but in Vinegar Hill. Where does she fit into our town’s history and heart?
Pulitzer-Prize-winning composer William Bolcom and playwright Sandra Seaton have imagined Sally’s inner life and journey in their masterful 2001 poetic song cycle, which will be interspersed with local filmmaker Chris Farina’s Charlottesville documentary, shot in the late 1980’s and early 90’s. Through a variety of residents’ personal and often humorous memories, the community’s past and present is gradually woven together. Multimedia performance artist Marisa Williamson (a 2018 UVA Ruffin Distinguished Artist-in-Residence), whose body of work has centered around the figure of Sally Hemings, ties together these threads of inheritance, memory and storytelling with a new video installation commissioned by VHO.
“Sally on West Main” is supported by grants from the University of Virginia Office of the Vice-Provost for the Arts and The J & E Berkley Foundation.
