Schumann Ghost House
Thanks to all who attended this sold-out event
What does it mean to be a gay artist? What ghosts inhabit the singer's song?
VHO recitalists Brenda Patterson and Will Ferguson (both former Winners of the Alice Tully Debut Recital Competition) will seek to answer this question with an afternoon of Schumann as never before seen or heard.
Tenor Will Ferguson with pianist Renate Rohlfing will offer Schumann's Dichterliebe ("Poet Love") in an immersive staging recreating seminal moments from his childhood and adolescence, as a boy coming to terms with his gayness in a conservative Southern household.
Using Schumann's music (the classic song cycle "Frauenliebe und -leben", or "A Woman's Love & Life") from 1840, set with new texts by contemporary lesbian poet Emily Moore (New Yorker, Paris Review), Brenda Patterson at once effaces and revivifies Schumann's original masterpiece, reclaiming it as a modern, fully inhabited work.
Immerse yourself - as together we cross over to the other side of music.
